‘Brussels’ is a song about nothing, well almost nothing. International touring is about as much fun as it gets but sometimes you find yourself driving for days on end. Amidst a 1300 km drive from San Sebastian to Holland, stuck in traffic just to the north of Paris, ‘the French summertime shines bright on the tarmacs shuffle’ we passed a sign that said Brussels 233 km. This was going to be the 4th time we had driven passed Brussels on our mad European zig-zag tour. The song is a faithful account of a dazed drive on an endless highway making quirky references to the polish dominance behind the truckers wheel and even the odd stab at the UN ‘when Geneva meets the poor from France will Gypsies dance’? to Juxtapose the monotonous bored feeling of being stuck in the blistering midday Paris traffic ‘Brussels’ feels like breezy carefree fun.
Taking the breezy fun to new heights, ‘Brussels’ was produced by Elliot Hammond, Alex Marckwell (The Delta Riggs) and engineered by our good friend George Carpenter were we recorded live in the tranquil hillsides behind Byron Bay. Hopefully the next time we see a road sign that reads Brussels we get to actually check it out and play a gig.
